Our Story

Memory Matters’ bold vision and mission is to “Optimize Brain Wellness.”  We balance Brain Health Education with professional Memory Care Services.  We are unique in the Lowcountry, and our expertise in brain health and memory care is unsurpassed.

Memory Matters was founded in 1997 as a nonprofit IRS 501(c)3 charitable organization, seed-funded by Brookdale Foundation. Our original mission was to sustainably support caregivers of loved ones diagnosed with dementia. In our first 12 years we were nomads, holding adult day care programs each week in five churches on Hilton Head Island and in Bluffton, SC.

In December 2009, we moved to our own 7,000-square-foot facility licensed by South Carolina Department of Health and Environment Control. Our licensure covers memory care for up to 60 participants each day.

In 2018, the Board of Directors reframed our vision and mission to encompass everyone, brain-healthy or brain-compromised.  We proactively tackle memory loss by encouraging early intervention and promoting a healthy lifestyle based on five simple interventions – consistent exercise, Mediterranean lifestyle, lifelong learning, staying connected and meditation.

As an Angel Charity in South Carolina and Gold Level on GuideStar, we care for all who seek our help, regardless of ability to pay. About 65% of our budget is funded by community donors, and 35% is funded by program fees. We work with more than 100 volunteers to stretch the reach of our professional staff. Community-minded individuals serve on our Board of Directors, work in the Day Programs, make educational presentations, raise funds, and serve as ambassadors.
