Magic Bus

I could see them waiting at the front door, all dressed up and ready to go. As I shut the hatch, grabbed my stuff and headed over from the parking lot,  a beautifully colored van with pastoral scenes of happy elderly people engaged in exciting activities pulled slowly around the circular driveway and stopped at the entrance. I recognized some of the people waiting in line but many of the faces were new to me.

“Well, good afternoon! Where are you all headed today?”

“Shopping!” they all exclaimed in enthusiastic unison.

A barrel chested man with a crew cut and military campaign cap let go of his walker to open the front door for me. I held out my hand to thank him. His mighty grip was so very strong I thought he might crush my fingers.

“Thank you sir!”

“You’re welcome son. Now get in there and make them smile.”

“Yes sir, I will do my best.”

“I know you will son. You always do.”

“Thank you, sir.”

“Ya’ know that old trees just grow stronger
And old rivers grow wilder ev’ry day
Old people just grow lonesome
