For many years I have avoided social media like the plague, but recently my daughter’s departure to a 4-week classical music summer camp held in upstate New York has resulted in me reactivating my Facebook account. The camp has a strict ‘No Devices’ policy for the kids, which I think is a very good thing. That said, one of the only ways for us to keep track of her is through the camp’s Facebook page, where they post pictures, videos and live stream concerts on the weekends. So, once again into the breach… “Isn’t it ironic, don’t you think?” – Alanis Morissette
One of the unintended, and I must admit, very pleasant consequences of my reactivation has been the discovery of the Facebook page of a wonderful nonprofit organization dedicated to the care of people with memory impairment that my daughter and I have been performing at for the past few months. The staff, volunteers, and participants have all accepted us into their wonderful community. It is an honor and privilege for us to perform there and be a small part of the important work they do each and every day. As I went through the center’s Facebook page an entire world of familiar faces opened to me. It was truly a revelation……..Who says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks?
