A lesson John Ratliff learned along the way. It sounds like his life has been a rich tapestry!
Paperboy, babysitter, apple picker, fuel pumper, warehouse worker, lifeguard, pots and pans salesman, bus driver, bouncer, computer programmer, software engineer, project manager, I.T. director, entrepreneur…………
When I think back on all the jobs I’ve held, one realization keeps coming back around, again and again. If I could figure out a way to make the work fun, to use my imagination and become enthusiastic about it, to bring a unique approach, to take ownership, to take pride in it, then the job often stopped feeling like drudgery and I would become much more productive. The time would fly by. This didn’t always work but more often than not it made all the difference. Like so much in life, the attitude I brought was often the determining factor.
“Let my people surf!” – Yvon Chouinard (Patagonia founder)
“Work hard, have fun, make money!” – Joe Scarlett ( Tractor Supply CEO)
“The master in the art of living makes little distinction between his work and his play, his labor, and his leisure, his mind and his body, his education and his recreation, his love and his religion. He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence at whatever he does, leaving others to decide whether he is working or playing. To him, he is always doing both.” – James Michener (writer)
“Hard work never killed anybody… Thinking about it is what always did them in.” – Jack Hubler (my grandfather)
